Recreate the programs and services available from the Dancer Transition Resource Centre for youth
The work of the DTRC has been very successful. I think with some tweeking this model would transform economic opportunities for Ontario's youth.
Here are some reason's to vote for this idea. The DTRC's approach is:
• evidence based
• strong case which appeals to the public and private sectors
• leverages academia and educational institutions
• wholistic and exploratory philosophy including skills training grants, five types of counselling, retraining grants, and career exploration grants.
• measurable
• establishes long-term relationships with clientsFor more info: http://dtrc.ca/html/what_en.html

Jobs with 'Training Wheels' - Centres of supported employment and entrepreneurship
Youth need the opportunity to develop good working habits, gain experience for their resumes and be supported in accessing work. The main issue for youth in this economy is being able to access entry level jobs in all sectors when they do not have the experience to compete. Entrepreneurship support is also important for those who want to start their own businesses but they need direct opportunities to sell their stuff and develop their businesses. Real world, supported experience is a must. Our youth volunteer led cafe offers opportunities for young people to get this experience through work experience by… more

Enterprsie Development accompanied by adequate Training, job palcement and financial support
there is a lack of enterprise knowledge for youth to adequately make informed decisions about the enterprises they want to open up. the issue is that youth are not given the opportunity to learn through training(hands on training) about the careers, business they want to open up. We are lacking employment placements for youth as they are only 4 avenues that youth can gain employment , tropicana Summer jobs, TDSB, TCDSB focus on youth, province intern opps. and weith teh restructuring of employment ontario , youth are going to be competing with adults for subsidy placement limiting the number of… more

A broad reaching systemic change
The main barriers for youth employment in Canada are:
1) Lack of confidence, knowledge of opportunities and role models
2) Agism in the work place
3) Lack of quality training opportunities for youth after high school
Ontario needs a provincial youth employment policy that will give direction to the numerous organizations working to promote youth empowerment and employment. Additionally, an umbrella organization should be created that helps coordinate the actions of various stakeholders, such as youth-employment organizations (Talent Egg), funders (OTF), and politicians. This organization would also be the voice of youth in Ontario and aim towards a strong media… more

UNIFIED = ONE VOICE
A provincial non-profit organization representing all the youth economic development and advisory committees needs to be established. Youth across the province must be UNIFIED and must have ONE VOICE. The organization would develop policy positions and reports on economic development issues facing youth, including; job placements, increase in co-op opportunities, summer employment, funding and much more. Furthermore, a mechanism needs to be in place to obligate the Province to consult with the youth organization on matters affecting youth economic development opportunities. This would set out a commitment to develop a framework for collaborative decision-making and actions towards meaningful economic development… more

Social Enterprise Accelerator for Young Social Entrepreneurs
Most social enterprises are small businesses. What about investing time, resources, and yes, start-up capital into those that can really scale? That could serve an international market? That focus on products & technologies rather than neighbourhood services?

Social Economy for Youth
We are establishing an integrated set up / inubator where youth could learn skills and develop competencies which take them beyond employability, and offers opportunity of ownership and participation in decision making in their enterprises. The enterprises we select will have social roots and markets.
For us, this concept of social economy comprises of business models and opportunities combined in community based enterprises in the service sector. These enterprises would be owned and operated by a group of 7 to 15 youth with supplementary skills and strong team spirit, leading to mutually supportive schdeules to facilitate their educational and family… more112 votes -
Increase financial and advisory resources to decrease risk for young entrepreneurs.
Rather than give money to large companies, why not put the money towards university students and their fresh ideas? Ontario has no shortage of young talented individuals who have the potential to become tomorrow's most successful innovators and entrepreneurs. Providing financial and mentorship services to university students will allow them to create their own economic opportunities. This is an initial investment for Ontario, but will pay off in a large increase in future employment and economic prosperity for the province.

Emphasize the value of career exploration vs. just earning money
Active career counselling at schools, at home and with peers would help students to think of what they really want to do, instead of just thinking about making money. Of course money is important, but being charged up by your job and potentially discovering a career that suits you, is equally if not more important.

Educate the public about the benefits of hiring youth
We need to show businesses the benefits of offering quality jobs to youth. If youth are able to apply and work in different areas, it will help lead them into fields of study in which they are interested in.

Universities should become more exclusive
Ontario has flooded the job market with too many young people with generic arts and science degrees. The employment demand for these people is very low and outlook is poor. Universities need to act less like for-profit corporations and more like facilities of education. Reduce the number of undergraduate spaces in generic programs, and kick out students who don't take their education seriously. Maybe then a university degree could mean something again.

Educate students and *parents* about the economy
Many parents believe that the only way for their child to succeed in life is to attend university, when in reality, unspecialized university degrees do little other than to provide entry-level employment. More promotion of college/apprenticeship programs would be useful. This should be done by grade 10 so students can plan ahead.
